Why your constructors stand idle and how to fix it
Constructor units in BAR are supposed to build, repair, and assist automatically. They sit idle far more often than they should. The problem almost always comes down to movement states and command queues that the game does not explain clearly. Here is how to get constructors actually doing what you tell them.

The idle constructor problem
You queue units in a factory. You have spare constructors sitting nearby doing nothing. Your build times suffer. The problem is not a broken game. It is that constructor assist behavior depends on specific movement state settings that most players never touch because the defaults leave constructors in a passive mode.
Constructors do not automatically run to a factory and assist it just because it is building something. They need to be in the right state and pointing in the right direction. Once you understand the system, it takes about thirty seconds to set up. Ignoring it costs you build power every single game.
Repair behavior that does not trigger
A frequent complaint is that repair commands do not work the way players expect. You order a constructor to repair an area. It moves to the area and stands there. The constructor only reacts to building blueprints on the ground. It does not automatically start repairing units already built nearby.
This is where the movement state matters. Repair as a command does not change the constructor movement state the way fight does. A constructor set to maneuver will move to the repair area, scan for building blueprints, and assist those. It will ignore damaged units unless you give them specific repair orders.
The fix is to set constructors to maneuver mode for repairing your own building blueprints, and set them to roam mode if you want them to assist teammate structures as well. Roaming constructors will move into allied territory and help build or repair friendly structures without requiring individual orders.
The right movement states for each job
BAR constructors respond to three main movement states, and picking the correct one solves most idle and assist problems:
Maneuver. Use this when you want constructors to actively build or repair your own structures and blueprints. A maneuver-mode constructor moves to a location and starts assisting any building blueprints or structures it finds. This is the standard build-and-repair mode.
Roam. Use this when you want constructors to assist allied structures across the map. A roaming constructor will wander toward allied buildings and help complete construction or perform repairs. Roaming constructors are especially valuable when you are building a forward base with teammates. Your constructors will naturally gravitate toward unfinished allied structures.
Hold position. Use this when you want a constructor stationed at a specific location. Hold position constructors do not roam or wander. They only respond to direct build or repair orders. This keeps a constructor near a forward position ready to repair defensive structures without accidentally wandering off.
Area repair mechanics and how they really work
Area repair is a command where you draw a rectangle on the map and constructors within range move to that area to repair. The mechanic works, but with limitations that cause confusion.
Area repair targets building blueprints first. If there are no incomplete structures in the repair area, the constructor arrives and idles. It does not automatically switch to repairing damaged existing units. This behavior catches players off guard because the command name suggests general repair coverage.
The practical workaround is to combine area repair with direct unit repair commands. Use area repair to complete construction projects. Use individual repair orders for damaged units. Do not expect one command to handle both jobs.
If nothing needs repairing in the area you selected, the constructor will idle after arriving. Set a secondary order so the constructor does not waste time waiting. Queue a metal extractor build command or assign the constructor to assist a factory after the repair job.
Automating constructor assist for your production loop
The fastest economies in BAR run constructors that automatically assist factories. Here is how to set it up:
- Set assisting constructors to maneuver mode.
- Select all constructors you want to assist and give them a repair or assist command on the factory or lab queue.
- The constructors will move to the factory and contribute their build power to every unit in the queue.
- Keep at least one constructor free for building metal extractors and energy infrastructure.
If constructors still refuse to assist after following these steps, check that you are targeting the factory itself and not the ground nearby. The assist command needs to land on the building structure, not open space around it.
Testing your macro setup
The BAR community has built macro challenges that test whether your constructor economy actually works. These challenges present specific economic scenarios and ask you to optimize constructor allocation, timing, and resource flow. Running through these exercises reveals gaps in your macro habits that normal games mask because you have other things to focus on.
A good test: set up a skirmish game with three factories and two constructors. See how many constructors you can productively keep assisting production versus expanding your economy. If you have constructors sitting idle at any point, something in your state or command setup is wrong. Fix it before taking those habits into multiplayer.
Quick troubleshooting for constructor issues
- Constructors standing near a factory but not assisting? Check that they are in maneuver mode and that you assisted the factory building itself.
- Area repair not working? Make sure there are actual building blueprints in the target area. Otherwise constructors arrive and do nothing.
- Roam mode constructors running off the map? Add a hold position constructor at key locations or use a rally point near your production base.
- Teammate asking for builder help but none come? Ensure at least one constructor is set to roam so it crosses into ally territory.
Creed of Champions
Macro mechanics in RTS games are the kind of thing that separate decent players from great ones. But learning macro alone in skirmish is slow and frustrating. Creed of Champions runs structured training sessions where experienced players walk through exactly these kinds of mechanics with people who are still learning. No judgment. No toxicity. Just players helping players improve through hands-on practice. If you want a community that actually invests in your skills, come join us.
