How to find unit internal names in Beyond All Reason

BAR players frequently need unit internal names. The names appear in the Barbarian AI unit ban screen and are required for custom lobby configurations. Here is where to find them.

Find unit names on the website

The official BAR website lists every unit in the game. Open any unit page and look at the URL. The internal name appears at the end of the web address. This is the fastest method for most players and requires no technical setup.

When setting up a Barbarian AI match and you want to ban specific units like the experimental factory, you need the internal name. The website has it. Type what appears in the URL into the lobby ban field.

Press I in game

During a match, press the I key on any unit to open the info panel. The unit name and internal designation appear there. This works even during active combat and lets you look up names for units you encounter but do not recognize.

The units JSON file

For players who want the complete list, the unit names are stored in a JSON file on the BAR GitHub repository. The file lives at the language/en/units.json path in the main repository. Every unit in the game is listed with its internal name and display name.

This is the authoritative source. If the website and the JSON file disagree, the JSON file is correct because it is what the game engine actually reads.

Hidden OpenSkill in the lobby

Players sometimes wonder how hidden OpenSkill works when teammates display question marks. The lobby setting that toggles rating visibility applies to your own view only. Other players in the lobby may see different information based on their own settings.

If you have hidden rating, your teammates with visible ratings can still see your chevron count. The chevron gives them a rough idea of your experience level even without the precise OpenSkill number.
