Where to start as a new player

BAR has a steep learning curve and that is normal. The fastest path forward is to use the community learning resources directly. Ask questions openly in the dedicated learning channels where experienced players regularly answer. Mentors hang around those channels and walk through game mechanics with you. You do not need to figure everything out alone from replays or wiki diving. Just ask.

Skirmish practice against the AI helps build muscle memory for builder management and factory queuing. Raise the AI aggression level gradually as you get more comfortable. Start on simple maps like Altair Crossing where there are few moving parts and you can focus on economy flow.

How the OpenSkill rating system works in BAR

BAR uses the OpenSkill algorithm for matchmaking. It tracks two values internally called mu and sigma. Mu represents your estimated skill level. Sigma represents the uncertainty around that estimate. Winning increases mu. Losing decreases it. As you play more games, sigma shrinks because the system becomes more confident about where you actually sit.

What you see in the UI is a simplified presentation of these values with bar names instead of raw mu and sigma numbers. You can also run $whoami in the chat to see your rank details under the hood. The displayed chevron level does not map exactly to the OpenSkill rating. They measure related but different things.

Some players check win predictions before matches using the rating panel. These predictions pull from the underlying OpenSkill values to estimate expected outcomes.

Building good habits early

Focus on economy management first. Get your metal extractors running smoothly, build a healthy energy base, then worry about unit composition. Economy problems cause more losses than bad army decisions in the first hundred games. Keep builders working, keep factories producing, and keep expanding to new metal spots when you can defend them.

BAR has automated saves for replays. Upload your games to the BAR website replay library and share the link when you want feedback. Other players can pull up your replay and point out exactly where things went off track.

Join a team that helps you improve

Learning an RTS alone is slow and frustrating. Creed of Champions runs training sessions and team games where experienced players actively coach newer members. The focus is on hands-on learning in a supportive group. No one gets yelled at for suboptimal plays. The community exists to help players climb the learning curve together.

"Creed of Champions is a great place to learn and play BAR in a friendly atmosphere. Training sessions, team gameplay, even some non-BAR stuff. Large cross section of abilities, time zones, and game mode interests."
